What We Do

Founded in 2021, Louisville Survivability & Self-Sufficiency was created with a simple belief: every person should have the knowledge and opportunity to become more self-sufficient. Through education, partnerships, and community involvement, we're helping build a stronger, more resilient Louisville.

Our Mission

Louisville Survivability & Self-Sufficiency (LSSS) was founded by Ishmael Weaver in 2021 with a vision of helping individuals and families become more self-sufficient through practical knowledge, community collaboration, and sustainable living.

After experiencing homelessness and the daily uncertainty of finding food and basic necessities, Ishmael recognized how important it is for people to have the skills and resources to provide for themselves. Those experiences inspired him to create an organization dedicated to educating and empowering the community.

Today, LSSS works in partnership with Million Dollar Estates LLC, which provides operational and management support to help carry the organization's mission forward.

Our goal is to build stronger communities by teaching practical skills such as food production, water security, emergency preparedness, and resource conservation. We also collaborate with local businesses, organizations, and property owners to establish community gardens, where harvested produce is shared with those who need it most.

Our focus includes:

  • Community gardens and urban agriculture

  • Growing fruits and vegetables

  • Raising sustainable food sources such as rabbits, fish, and other livestock appropriate for small-scale food production

  • Rainwater collection and water conservation

  • Water filtration and purification education

  • Emergency preparedness and survival skills

  • Building partnerships that strengthen our community

We believe that when people have the knowledge and confidence to provide for themselves, entire communities become stronger.

What We’ve Achieved

Although Louisville Survivability & Self-Sufficiency is still in its early years, we are proud of the foundation we are building.

Since our founding, we have:

  • Built an online community with 29 Facebook followers and 45 Instagram followers

  • Received our first community donation of $1.35, demonstrating that every contribution, regardless of size, helps move our mission forward

  • Begun building partnerships with local organizations and businesses to expand opportunities for future community garden projects

  • Hosted a community event at the Western Library in Louisville, Kentucky, where we:

    • Demonstrated how to plant tomato plants

    • Shared plant care instructions

    • Educated attendees about our mission

    • Held a giveaway featuring a plant starter kit to encourage participants to begin growing their own food

These milestones represent the beginning of our journey. As we continue to grow, we look forward to expanding our educational programs, developing more community gardens, increasing volunteer involvement, and creating lasting partnerships that help Louisville become a more self-sufficient community.
