Projects

Louisville Survivability & Self-Sufficiency is committed to creating practical, long-term solutions that help individuals and families become more self-sufficient. Through education, partnerships, and volunteer opportunities, our projects are designed to strengthen our community while promoting sustainable living.

Whether you're interested in gardening, food preservation, emergency preparedness, or volunteering, there's a place for you to make a difference.

Community Garden Initiative

Our primary initiative is establishing community gardens in partnership with local nonprofits, churches, schools, and businesses throughout Louisville.

Rather than purchasing land, we collaborate with organizations that already serve the community by helping transform available space into productive gardens. These gardens provide opportunities for education, volunteer service, and fresh food for the community.

We are excited to share that our first community partner has agreed to host a garden. The project is currently in the planning phase while preparations, including the installation of a protective fence, are completed before construction begins.

This partnership represents the first step toward creating a network of community gardens across Louisville.

Growing food

Growing your own food is one of the most valuable skills a person can learn. We promote practical gardening methods that can be used in backyards, raised beds, community gardens, or even small spaces.

Topics include:

  • Vegetable gardening

  • Fruit production

  • Herb gardens

  • Raised-bed gardening

  • Seasonal planting

  • Urban gardening

harvesting and Preserving food

Growing food is only part of becoming self-sufficient. Learning how to preserve your harvest helps reduce waste and provides nutritious food throughout the year.

We plan to educate our community about:

  • Proper harvesting techniques

  • Food storage

  • Canning

  • Freezing

  • Drying and dehydrating

  • Long-term food preservation

composting

Healthy soil produces healthy food.

Composting transforms kitchen scraps and yard waste into nutrient-rich soil that supports productive gardens while reducing waste.

Our educational efforts will include:

  • Backyard composting

  • Compost bins

  • Soil improvement

  • Organic gardening practices

seed saving

Saving seeds allows gardeners to become more independent while preserving successful crops for future growing seasons.

We encourage learning about:

  • Collecting seeds

  • Proper seed storage

  • Seed sharing within the community

  • Preserving heirloom varieties

volunteer opportunities

Our projects are made possible by volunteers who are willing to serve their community.

Volunteers may assist with:

  • Building and maintaining community gardens

  • Planting and harvesting crops

  • Educational workshops

  • Community events

  • Garden maintenance

  • Future expansion projects

Whether you're an experienced gardener or planting for the very first time, your willingness to help can make a lasting impact.
